This is my FACE - preschool about me activity - ESL kids

on Mon, 13/06/2016 - 15:12

Teaching young children about themselves, their bodies, their place in the world is a very important subject. The best way to start a new schoolyear is to do many activities that speak ABOUT ME. Especially in the beginning of the schoolyear, when the preschoolers come back to school and have to find their place again inside the classroom and the group, it's essential that the teacher creates space for each of the students to present themselves. Usually it starts with name activities followed by self potraits and learning about their body. This post gives you some ideas about how to teach the facial parts to learners in the age of 2 to 5 years old.

In my teaching routine I start with a story, then a very practical hands on activity, and I finish with a creative work combined with a song.

- The Story "Is this my nose?"-

This book is perfect for children in the age from 1,5 to 4/5 years old. It's imple with nice faces of children and animals. And ofcourse at the end of the book a mirror to admire our own faces.

- A practical activity to learn the facial parts -

I've cut a big empty oval and covered it with tinfoil to make it look like a mirror. Teaching about face means using a lot of times the mirror. I pretend to look in this big mirror and to "draw" my facial parts. For this game I've cut eyes, ears, mouth, nose , ears, hair and a bow. Every facial part must be put on it's correct place, and each of my students can try to help me. The bow is being used in the end when the children have to decide if the face is a boy or a girl.

- Hands on activity learning about the FACE -

Which classroom doesn't have a mirror? The perfect tool when you teach ABOUT ME. Make the kids stand in front of it, while you mention the diffenret facial parts that they have to touch.

- Creative activity learning about the facial parts and about me -

This picture is one of my favorites. My little student Giovanni used the lipstick on the mirror to draw his own self potrait. All kids love, love, love to do this little cerative work.

- Creative activity learning about the facial parts and about me -

I've laminated empty faces of girls and boys. Prepare all colours of playdough and loose objects (googly eyes/ bottle caps/ pieces of straw/ pipecleaners) to create and combine together in a face.

- This is my FACE song -

"This is my face as round as can be

Eyes, Ears, Mouth, Nose, just like me.

This is my face as round as can be

Eyes, Ears, Mouth, Nose, just like me.

This is my face as round as can be Boy or a Girl , let me see..."
